Did you know that a loofah (or luffa) is actually a fruit related to the cucumber? There are many cultures around the world that enjoy loofah in their cuisines. People usually think of a loofah as a spongy, handheld scrubber that you might find in the shower or kitchen, but imagine them growing on a plant!
Seeing as they are so commonly used for exfoliating and cleansing skin it seems only right that should be incorporated into a soap! Soap-making has always fascinated me, it’s amazing that only a few simple materials can make something so lovely. It’s actually really simple to make your own these days using soap base which you can buy in hobby stores or online.
This super easy method produces 4 bars of loofah soap perfect for using in your home or for giving away to family and friends as a quirky gift. There’s no excuse, give it a go!
Materials:
¾ lb clear glycerin soap base
An oval soap mold
A Loofah
A sharp knife
A microwave safe spouted measuring cup [I can’t live without my pyrex!]
A wooden craft stick for stirring
Method:
Cut up your soap base into 1 inch cubes and place into the microwave safe measuring cup.
Heat in the microwave on high for 30 seconds, remove and give it a good stir.
Heat for more 30 second increments, stirring between each heating session, until the soap base is fully melted.
Carefull cut the loofah into 4 slices and pop a loofah slice into each mold cavity.
Pour soap over loofah to fill the mold. The loofah will try to float to the top so you will need to push the loofah down with the craft stick a bit.
Allow soap to set for 2 hours.
It really couldn’t be more simple than that!
